Thinning hair happens gradually and unlike widespread hair loss (Alopecia), it does not necessarily cause baldness. It does however, gives the appearance of thinner spots of hair on your head. Thinning hair may be caused by lifestyle habits, genetics or both. This becomes a problem when someone loses more than 100 hairs a day.
Lifestyle habits include over treating hair (color, perms, relaxers) and use of harsh hair products such as extreme hold hair sprays and gels. Diets poor in iron, folic acid and other minerals can lad to poor follicle hair growth. Stress, hereditary factors, childbirth, hormonal changes and certain autoimmune diseases can also play a role.
